# 3.2 - Field Training Roles & Responsibilities

> Roles, responsibilities, and authority within the DPS Field Training Program.

### Field Training Officer (FTO)

The Field Training Officer serves as the **primary hands-on trainer** for Cadets and Probationary personnel.

**Responsibilities**

* Conduct ride-alongs with Cadets
* Provide real-time coaching and guidance during patrol
* Evaluate trainee performance and progression
* Document observations and submit reports for review by FTIs and FTS
* Assist with academy instruction when assigned

**Authority**

* May sign off on approved progression milestones
* Does **not** conduct final solo evaluations unless authorized by an FTS or FTD

### Field Training Instructor (FTI)

The Field Training Instructor serves as an **advanced trainer and evaluator** within the FTP.

**Responsibilities**

* Conduct ride-alongs with Cadets
* Evaluate trainee progression and performance
* Conduct solo tests for Cadets within the department
* Lead and conduct academy training blocks
* Assist in supervision and coordination of the FTP

**Authority**

* May approve progression milestones
* May conduct and pass/fail solo evaluations
* Reports findings to the FTS or FTD

### Field Training Supervisor / Head FTI (FTS)

The Field Training Supervisor oversees the **daily operation and consistency** of the Field Training Program.

**Responsibilities**

* Supervise all FTOs and FTIs
* Conduct ride-alongs and evaluations as needed
* Review training documentation and performance reports
* Conduct or oversee solo testing
* Ensure training standards are applied consistently across departments
* Serve as the primary liaison between training staff and command personnel

**Authority**

* Final approval on Cadet progression within the FTP
* May recommend remediation, extension, or removal from the program
* Reports directly to the Field Training Director

### Field Training Director (FTD)

The Field Training Director is the **executive authority** over the Field Training Program.

**Responsibilities**

* Lead and oversee all academy and field training operations
* Establish training standards and curriculum
* Develop new training initiatives and instructional methods
* Review program effectiveness and trainee outcomes
* Advise Chiefs, Sheriffs, and the State Police Commander on training policy
* Propose and assist with development of new SOPs and training-related policies

**Authority**

* Final authority over FTP structure, standards, and outcomes
* May approve or deny trainee advancement
* May suspend or modify training procedures as necessary
* Serves as the final review authority in training-related disputes
