# 4.1 - Radio Communication

> Radio communication standards and transmission expectations for DPS personnel.

Clear and disciplined radio communication is essential to safe and effective operations. All personnel are expected to maintain professional radio conduct at all times.

### General Expectations

* Members shall acknowledge radio transmissions that are relevant to their unit, assignment, or involvement.
* Think before transmitting. Messages should be deliberate, clear, and necessary.
* Use approved radio codes and terminology only.
* Slang, excessive chatter, jokes, or off-topic discussion is strictly prohibited.
* The radio is an **operational tool**, not a social channel.

### Transmission Standards

* Communications must be concise, calm, and clearly spoken.
* Identify your **unit and department** when initiating a transmission.
* Do not interrupt ongoing traffic unless priority or emergency conditions exist.
* Avoid overlapping transmissions whenever possible.
