# 7.11 - Commands, Control & Leash Use

> Standard K-9 commands, keybinds, leash control, and reinforcement practices.

To define the standard command structure, control procedures, and leash requirements for all K-9 handlers operating under the Department’s **K-9** Program. Consistent command use and handler discipline ensure operational effectiveness, safety, and **K-9** welfare during deployment.

## Command Integration & Use

The Department utilizes an integrated K-9 control system consisting of in-game handler commands and assigned keybinds. These controls represent the real-world commands, gestures, and cues used in active deployments.

**Authorized Command Set:**

| Command                     | Function         | Description                                                                                          |
| --------------------------- | ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `/petfollow`                | Follow           | Commands the K-9 to follow the handler at a controlled distance.                                     |
| `/petstand`                 | Stand / Ready    | Commands the K-9 to assume a stationary ready stance, awaiting further direction.                    |
| `/petcancel`                | Cancel Action    | Immediately terminates the **K-9's** current task or action (e.g., search, approach, or bite).       |
| `/petcuddle`                | Reward           | Used for positive reinforcement following a successful command, detection, or obedience task.        |
| `/openpetmenu` or `/petbag` | Gear / Inventory | Opens handler’s K-9 management interface to equip or manage items such as leash, muzzle, or harness. |

**Keybind Assignments (Handler Controls)**

Handlers shall be proficient in using these controls quickly and intuitively under operational stress. Improper or delayed command usage during an encounter may result in handler retraining or evaluation.

## Operational Command Sequences

Handlers are encouraged to maintain consistent and repeatable command sequences to reinforce obedience and clarity in deployment. Example standard procedures include:

* **Deployment Sequence:**
  1. Equip necessary gear via `/petbag` or `/openpetmenu` (leash, harness, muzzle).
  2. Position at the deployment zone.
  3. Issue `/petfollow` to initiate controlled movement.
  4. Transition to `/petstand` at the start of a search, checkpoint, or contact area.
* **Termination Sequence:**
  * Use `/petcancel` to safely abort or halt all **K-9** activity.
  * Reward successful performance with `/petcuddle` to maintain morale and obedience.

Handlers shall maintain vocal consistency, tone, and command phrasing between digital and real-world operations to ensure continuity of training and behavioral conditioning.

## Leash & Physical Control Policy

* The **K-9** must remain **leashed at all times during foot patrols or public interactions**, regardless of in-system follow mode.
* The leash serves as a **symbol and mechanism of control**, ensuring immediate response and preventing accidental contact with civilians or suspects.
* During active searches or detection operations, a **long line** or **tactical lead** may be used to allow extended range while maintaining control.
* The handler shall **never release the K-9** in public areas unless a lawful deployment is justified and authorized under the Department’s Use of Force and K-9 Deployment policies.
* Loss of leash control, failure to restrain, or improper equipment use shall result in **immediate supervisory review.**

## Reinforcement & Behavioral Conditioning

Handlers are encouraged to utilize positive reinforcement commands such as `/petcuddle` following obedience, detection, or tactical success. This builds the **K-9's** trust, focus, and long-term reliability. Excessive use of cancel or conflicting commands without reinforcement can lead to confusion or disobedience.
