# 7.3 - K9 Vehicle & Equipment

> Vehicle, seating, equipment, and environmental safety requirements for K-9 units.

**Purpose:**\
To ensure the safety, welfare, and operational readiness of all K-9 units by maintaining standardized vehicle configurations, approved safety equipment, and strict handling procedures during transport and deployment.

## Vehicle Type Requirement

All authorized K-9 handlers shall utilize an officially marked **Ford Police Interceptor Utility (Explorer)** or an approved equivalent SUV designed for dual-purpose K-9 operations.

* The rear seating area must contain a **half-cage divider** that allows for secure confinement of the **K-9** while maintaining adequate space and airflow.
* Vehicles must be equipped with proper **department insignia**, **unit identification**, and **K-9 warnings** (e.g., *Caution: Police Service Dog* decals).

## Seating Rules

* The **K-9** shall **always ride in the rear passenger area** on the caged side of the vehicle.
* No K-9 shall ever be placed in the front seat or any unprotected portion of the vehicle.
* Supervisors may authorize temporary use of the full rear seating compartment only in two circumstances:
  1. When the **K-9** is not on duty or has been transported to a secure location.
  2. During a **downed-officer rescue** or **critical emergency** requiring additional seating, and only with **explicit supervisor authorization**.
* At no time shall a **K-9** be transported unrestrained or unsecured.

## Vehicle Modifications & Safety Features

All K-9 vehicles shall include, at minimum:

* **Heavy-duty steel cage** or divider rated for impact resistance.
* **Automated ventilation system** for temperature control.
* **Temperature monitoring system** with both in-vehicle display and handler alert.
* **Remote door release** and **emergency extraction feature** enabling rapid deployment of the K-9 in life-threatening situations.
* **Automatic door lock override** in case of vehicle malfunction.
* **Protective window guards** and **rear-seat padding** to prevent injury.

## Required Equipment in Vehicle

Every K-9 vehicle shall be stocked with the following equipment and maintained in ready condition:

* **Water container** and **collapsible bowl** for hydration.
* **Primary and backup leashes** (6 ft minimum).
* **K-9 first-aid kit**, including wound care and cooling supplies.
* **Booties** for hot or hazardous terrain.
* **Adjustable harness** and **spare harness**.
* **Muzzle** appropriate to the **K-9's** size and assignment.
* **Protective gloves** for the handler.
* **Towels, disinfectant wipes, and cleaning materials** for sanitation.
* **Flashlight or tactical light** for nighttime care and inspection.

## Temperature & Environmental Safety

* Handlers shall **never leave a K-9 unattended** in a vehicle unless environmental and mechanical safeguards ensure the dog’s safety.
* If the **K-9** must remain in the vehicle:
  * The **temperature control system** must remain active.
  * The **temperature alarm** must be armed.
  * The handler must conduct **visual and system checks every 15 minutes** (or as specified by department policy).
* In the event of **HVAC failure** or rising interior temperature, the handler must immediately remove the **K-9** and notify supervision.
* Failure to adhere to temperature safety policy will result in immediate review and potential disciplinary action.
