# FTD - Academy Curriculum & Graduation Prerequisites

> Core classroom blocks, practical exercises, and assessment standards for cadets.

# Academy Curriculum

The academy establishes the minimum knowledge and practical foundation required before a cadet begins supervised field phases. Instruction must use the **current DPS SOP**; a training presentation cannot change an enforceable policy.

## Core Instruction Blocks

| Block | Minimum subject matter |
| - | - |
| Department orientation | DPS structure, LSPD/SAST responsibilities, chain of command, training status |
| Ethics & conduct | Professionalism, truthfulness, impartiality, roleplay integrity, reporting misconduct |
| Communications | Radio etiquette, callsigns, priority traffic, channels, dispatcher coordination |
| Legal foundations | Consensual contacts, reasonable suspicion, probable cause, detention, arrest, search authority |
| Force & de-escalation | Objective reasonableness, force options, intervention, medical care, reporting |
| Routine patrol | Shift readiness, traffic stops, scene command, backup, officer safety |
| Custody & evidence | Search of detainees, transport cage restrictions, booking, chain of custody |
| MDT & reporting | Incident narratives, charges, related records, evidence references, corrections |
| Emergency operations | Pursuits, critical incidents, SAMS coordination, supervisor notifications |

## Practical Assessment

Before field placement, cadets should demonstrate, at a minimum:

* Correct radio call and emergency traffic usage.
* A lawful traffic stop and accurate incident articulation.
* Appropriate arrest and prisoner-handling procedures.
* Basic force/de-escalation decision-making in scenarios.
* A complete MDT report with corresponding case details.
* Appropriate response to an EMS or critical-scene scenario.

## Academy Completion Record

The instructor shall document attendance, assessed skills, results, corrections, and any missed blocks in the **Academy Tracking Sheet**. Incomplete or unsuccessful material must be remediated and reassessed before advancement.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This page defines **curriculum areas**, not a newly invented minimum score. The academy's approved examination rubric and passing thresholds must be recorded in its current tracking materials and approved by the Director.
