# 2.3 - Supervisors

> Supervisory authority, response expectations, and operational responsibilities.

Supervisors maintain professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness during routine patrol and critical incidents.

## 2.3.1 - Supervisory Roles

* Corporal and above may perform responsibilities permitted by their department and appointment; **Corporal is a supervisor-in-training**, not automatically equivalent to a Sergeant for every approval.
* Command may designate a member as **Acting Supervisor**, stating the scope and duration of that designation.
* A senior line officer does not automatically gain formal supervisory authority through seniority alone.

## 2.3.2 - Supervisor Requests

Supervisory assistance may be requested when an officer needs guidance, a civilian requests a supervisor, or the incident requires command presence due to complexity or seriousness.

When an appropriate supervisor is already present, additional supervisors should not respond unless requested by the on-scene supervisor, Dispatch, or Command, preserving patrol coverage.

## 2.3.3 - Responsibilities

Supervisors shall:

* Maintain unit distribution and coverage.
* Assist in response prioritization and resource coordination.
* Enforce radio discipline and operational policy.
* Assume or assign scene command where appropriate.
* Provide mentorship, corrective guidance, and accountability referrals.
* Ensure conduct aligns with DPS policies and values.

Scene-command transfer and operational control are governed by Section 3.4. DAPS investigations and penalties are governed by Section 7.
