# 4.1 - Radio Communication & Conduct

> Standards for clear, professional, and accountable DPS radio transmissions.

## 4.1.1 - General Expectations

All personnel shall maintain professional radio conduct. The radio is an **operational tool**, not a social channel.

* Acknowledge transmissions relevant to the unit, assignment, or active involvement.
* Think before transmitting. Messages shall be deliberate, necessary, and concise.
* Use approved radio codes, callsigns, and department terminology.
* Avoid slang, jokes, excessive chatter, and off-topic discussion.
* Remain calm and professional during routine and high-stress incidents.

## 4.1.2 - Transmission Standards

* Identify the transmitting unit by its assigned callsign and, when needed for clarity, its department.
* Provide information clearly, accurately, and without unnecessary detail.
* Do not interrupt ongoing traffic except for priority or emergency information.
* Avoid simultaneous or overlapping transmissions when reasonably possible.
* Update unit status and relay material developments as required by dispatch or applicable patrol procedures.

## 4.1.3 - Accountability

All official radio communications are subject to supervisory review. Misuse or intentional disruption of the radio may result in corrective action under the **Department Accountability Program (DAPS)**.

Professional misconduct is governed by **Section 1.1 — Code of Ethics & Conduct**. Priority traffic procedures are governed by **Section 4.2**.
