The Chain of Command is a foundational rule of DPS operations. Members will respect the authority of superior ranks and follow lawful orders and direction.

General Rules

  • Seek guidance through the Chain of Command whenever possible.
  • When a decision is needed, contact the rank directly above you first.
  • If the matter is time-sensitive or operationally urgent, members may contact an on-duty Sergeant or higher immediately.
  • If multiple supervisors are present, the highest-ranking on-scene supervisor is responsible for coordination unless command is formally transferred.

Lawful Orders

  • Members shall obey lawful orders.
  • If an order appears to conflict with policy or law, the member will respectfully notify the issuing supervisor. If the supervisor confirms the order, the member will comply unless the order is clearly unlawful, in which case it must be reported up the chain.
