To ensure that all police service dogs assigned to the Department are provided with consistent, humane, and nutritionally appropriate care routines that sustain health, maximize performance, and promote longevity. This section outlines handler responsibilities for feeding, hydration, rest, and daily welfare management.
Feeding Schedule & Nutrition
- Each K-9 shall be fed twice per day—typically morning and evening—unless otherwise directed by a department-approved veterinarian.
- Feeding amounts shall be based on the dog’s size, age, workload, and metabolism, as prescribed in the veterinary nutrition plan.
- Handlers shall monitor appetite daily and adjust caloric intake under veterinary supervision.
- Supplements, medications, or performance additives must not be administered without written veterinary approval.
- Food shall be stored in sealed, pest-proof containers and prepared in sanitary conditions.
- Sudden changes in diet are to be avoided unless medically necessary.
Hydration Requirements
- Fresh, clean water shall be available at all times when the K-9 is kenneled or resting.
- During deployment, the handler shall carry a portable water container and collapsible bowl.
- The K-9 should be offered water every 30–60 minutes during active operations, depending on temperature, workload, and environmental conditions.
- Handlers must routinely assess hydration levels by observing:
- Excessive panting or drooling.
- Gum color and moisture.
- Skin elasticity and overall demeanor.
- If dehydration is suspected, the handler shall remove the dog from service immediately and administer first-aid or veterinary evaluation as necessary.
Rest & Recovery
- K-9s require regular rest periods to maintain focus and endurance.
- The K-9 shall be housed in a quiet, secure, and well-ventilated area during rest or off-duty hours.
- Bedding must be clean, dry, and appropriately cushioned to prevent orthopedic injury.
- Overworking a K-9 without sufficient rest is prohibited and will result in supervisory review.
- Each K-9 should receive a minimum of one full rest day per week (rotation days may vary by assignment and deployment schedule).
Stat Tracking & Behavioral Management
The Department employs an internal K-9 performance model that monitors wellness through key metrics (“Stats”). Handlers are required to log and manage the following indicators:- Appetite: Decreases over time and during activity; higher depletion occurs when following, tracking, or attacking.
- Hydration: Decreases with heat, exercise, or extended patrol duration.
- Stamina: Used during work and regenerated through adequate sleep and recovery.
- Happiness & Loyalty: Maintained through positive interaction, training, play, and reward-based commands (e.g., follow, fetch, cuddle).
Daily & Weekly Health Checks
Handlers are responsible for conducting routine inspections to detect injury or illness early.- Daily:
- Inspect paws, pads, and nails for cuts, burns, or debris.
- Check ears, eyes, teeth, and coat for irritation or foreign objects.
- Observe gait and posture for signs of lameness or strain.
- Weekly:
- Record body weight and hydration trends.
- Inspect equipment fit (harness, collar, muzzle) for chafing or wear.
- Monthly:
- Conduct a full veterinary wellness examination including weight, orthopedic evaluation, and dental care review.
- Ensure vaccinations, preventatives, and microchip data are current.
