Supervisors maintain professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness during routine patrol and critical incidents.

2.3.1 - Supervisory Roles

  • Corporal and above may perform responsibilities permitted by their department and appointment; Corporal is a supervisor-in-training, not automatically equivalent to a Sergeant for every approval.
  • Command may designate a member as Acting Supervisor, stating the scope and duration of that designation.
  • A senior line officer does not automatically gain formal supervisory authority through seniority alone.

2.3.2 - Supervisor Requests

Supervisory assistance may be requested when an officer needs guidance, a civilian requests a supervisor, or the incident requires command presence due to complexity or seriousness. When an appropriate supervisor is already present, additional supervisors should not respond unless requested by the on-scene supervisor, Dispatch, or Command, preserving patrol coverage.

2.3.3 - Responsibilities

Supervisors shall:
  • Maintain unit distribution and coverage.
  • Assist in response prioritization and resource coordination.
  • Enforce radio discipline and operational policy.
  • Assume or assign scene command where appropriate.
  • Provide mentorship, corrective guidance, and accountability referrals.
  • Ensure conduct aligns with DPS policies and values.
Scene-command transfer and operational control are governed by Section 3.4. DAPS investigations and penalties are governed by Section 7.
