5.6.1 - Initial Investigation

A DUI or impaired-driving investigation must begin with lawful grounds for the stop/contact and be based on articulable observations. Officers shall consider driving behavior, statements, odor, visible impairment, relevant circumstances, and available supporting evidence rather than relying on unsupported assumptions.

5.6.2 - Investigation & Testing

Use authorized sobriety assessments and testing procedures within training, law, and DOJ policy. Explain requests clearly, document consent or other legal authority for testing, and do not present unsupported game mechanics as a verified scientific result. If a subject needs medical care, prioritize safety and coordinate with SAMS.

5.6.3 - Arrest, Vehicle & License Disposition

Arrest requires probable cause or another applicable legal basis. Custody and Miranda requirements follow Section 3.7. Any vehicle tow, impound, or license action must be independently authorized under the relevant policies and traffic/strike system; DUI suspicion alone does not establish every possible sanction.

5.6.4 - Documentation

Record the reason for contact, driving observations, relevant statements, tests offered/performed, results, evidence, custody disposition, vehicle action, and any applicable administrative citation or driver’s strike determination.
This is a procedural consolidation, not a new numerical BAC threshold or testing standard. Detailed testing protocols, legal limits, and driver’s strike amounts must come from the current DOJ/Traffic Code and academy qualification materials.
